  • Use a meat baster to "squeeze" your pancake batter onto the hot griddle... perfectly shaped pancakes every time.
  • To quickly use that frozen juice concentrate, simply mash it with a potato masher. No need to wait for it to thaw! A wire whip works also.

  • Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips.  An M&M will work, too!  (*Submitted by FrogLady)
  • Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispie Treats in the pan -- the marshmallow won't stick to your fingers.
  • When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead.  No white mess on the outside of the cake.
  • Place a slice of apple or a slice of bread in hardened brown sugar to soften it again.
  • Brush beaten egg white over pie crust before baking to yield a beautiful glossy finish.
  • Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispies Treats in the pan. The marshmallow won't stick to your fingers!
  • If you don't have enough batter to fill all cupcake tins, pour 1 tablespoon of water into the unfilled spots. This helps preserve the life of your pans!
  • To easily remove honey from a measuring spoon, first coat the spoon with nonstick cooking spray!
  • Sweeten whipped cream with confectioners' sugar instead of granulated sugar. It will stay fluffy & hold its shape better!
  • Use lifesavers candy to hold candles in place on your next birthday cake!

Tips & Tricks for Cleaning

  • You can remove rust stains caused by a leaky faucet by rubbing well with kerosene.
  • To remove starch buildup on your iron, set the iron to the rayon setting. Set several sheets of wax paper on top of some newspaper and run the iron over the wax paper. (The newspaper will absorb the wax.)
  • Homemade Deck Cleaner: 1 qt. bleach, 1 qt. TSP, 2 qts. water. (TSP is Trisodium Phosphate - a heavy duty all purpose cleaner and degreaser.)
  • An easy way to clean the ceiling fan is to cover your hands in a pair of old socks, and dip them in warm sudsy water and run your hand over top and bottom of each blade. Next time you clean the blades to your ceiling fan apply a thin coat of floor wax to them. It will keep future dust from clinging to them.
  • Wipe mini blinds with a damp fabric softener sheet to eliminate static that collects dust.
  • Use a blow dryer on low to clean pleated lampshades.
  • Pet hair will come off your furniture easily with a roller lint brush.
  • Make your own furniture polish by mixing one teaspoon lemon oil with two cups mineral oil.
  • Water rings may be removed by rubbing petroleum jelly thoroughly into the spot.
  • Polish ashtrays with furniture polish before using and they will wipe clean easily.
  • Club soda--removes stains, cleans sinks.
  • If your polished furniture has small scratches: Try rubbing them with a shelled walnut. You'll see the scratches just disappear!
  • Use peanut butter to remove gum in your carpet.
  • To aid in washing dishes, add a tablespoon of baking soda to your soapy water--it softens hands while cutting through grease.
  • Always spray your grill with nonstick cooking spray before grilling to avoid sticking.
  • Make the kitchen smell good! Bake orange peels in the oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes.
  • If you burn something in a pot or pan, here are some suggestions on how to get it off:
    • Cover the bottom on the pan with powdered detergent. Place a wet towel on top and leave it for a few hours. Then wash.
    • Or you can cover the burned area with baking soda and water. Leave soak overnight and then scour. (Do not use this method with an aluminum pan - it could etch the pan.)
    • Or sprinkle the burned on food with salt (wet the area first) and leave soak for about 10 minutes - then scrub.
    • Or cover the burned area with water and add a drop or two of dish soap. Place pan on stove and bring mixture to a boil. Then scrub.

  • If nothing sticks to TEFLON, then how do they get the sticker on the pan?
  • You know, sometimes I get the sudden urge to run around naked. But then I just drink some Windex. It keeps me from streaking.

Did You Know?
A clogged lint filter could possibly cause a dryer fire. You should occasionally clean your dryer's lint filter with warm soapy water and a toothbrush. Dryer sheets can cause a film and lint particles will stick to it making an almost invisible barrier in the tiny mesh openings in your lint filter. Try it! Run water in your lint filter and I'll bet you'll see some pooling of water. Now wash the filter and run water in it again. The water will run straight through meaning your filter will work better!
Note from Linda & Rich:  When we first read about this, we had to try it to see if the water would really "pool" in the screen on our dryer filter.  Sure enough, it did!  After cleaning the filter with warm soapy water and a brush, the water didn't "pool" anymore!

Tips & Tricks for Fruits & Vegetables

  • To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
  • To get the most juice out of fresh lemons, bring them to room temperature and roll them under your palm against the kitchen counter before squeezing.
  • To ripen avocados and bananas, enclose them in a brown paper bag with an apple for 2-3 days.
  • Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator it will keep for weeks.
  • When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness.
  • Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.
  • Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water.
  • Storing potatoes in the refrigerator will turn the starches in the potato to sugar.  Store potatoes in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place.
  • Wrapping potatoes in foil when baking will trap steam and can cause the potato to become soggy and mealy.
  • Next time you need a quick ice pack, grab a bag of frozen vegetables out of your freezer -- no watery leaks from a plastic baggie.
  • When making bread, substitute nondairy creamer for the dry milk--it works just as well.
  • Mash and freeze ripe bananas, in one-cup portions, for use in later baking. No wasted bananas (or you can freeze them whole, peeled, in plastic baggies.
  • Zap garlic cloves in the microwave for 15 seconds and the skins slip right off.

Tips & Tricks for Gardening

  • When starting your garden seedlings indoors, plant the seeds in egg shell halves.   Simply crack the shells around the roots of your plants & transplant them outdoors--the shell is a natural fertilizer!
  • Take four or five empty eggshells and put in 4 cups of water. Let stand for 24 hours. Water the plants with this mixture. It will help revive sick house plants.
  • Nicotine Spray:  To help control caterpillars, aphids and destructive worms.  Take one handful of tobacco and place in 1 gallon of water.  Mix and let stand 24 hours. Dilute the solution to the color of weak tea.  Do not spray on tomato, pepper, eggplant or any other plants that are members of the Solanaceous family, since nicotine can kill them.

  • To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before hard-boiling.
  • To easily remove burnt-on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan and bring to a boil on stovetop.  The skillet will be much easier to clean.
  • Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based sauces.  No more stains!
  • If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato - it absorbs the excess salt for an instant "fix me up".
  • To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh - if it rises to the surface, throw it away.
  • Don't throw out all that leftover wine:  Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.
  • If you have a problem opening jars:  Try using latex dishwashing gloves.  They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy.
  • To get rid of itch from mosquito bite: try applying soap on the area...instant relief!
  • It is said that ants will not cross a chalk line.  So if you've got ants, draw a line on the floor or wherever the ants are coming in.  Bet they don't cross the line!
  • Use air-freshener to clean mirrors:  It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.
  • Dripping faucet keeping you awake at night?  Tie a string around the head of the leaky faucet and let the end of the string flow down into the drain. The water will travel silently down the string. Then call your plumber in the morning!!
  • Keep the linings from cereal boxes--they make great substitutes for waxed paper!
  • Transfer your jelly to a small plastic squeeze bottle--no more messy, sticky jars or knives!  This also works well for homemade salad dressing!
  • In recipes calling for margarine, substitute reduced-calorie margarine to help cut back on fat! Same goes with sour cream, milk, cheese, cream cheese, and cream soups.
  • Instead of throwing away bread heels or leftover cornbread, use them to make bread crumbs. For use later, store them in the freezer.
  • Substitute half applesauce for the vegetable oil in your baking recipes. You'll greatly reduce the fat content! (Example: 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup applesauce + 1/4 cup oil).
  • Slicing meat when partially frozen makes it easier to get thin slices.
  • Rinse cooked, ground meat with water when draining off the fat--this helps "wash away" even more fat! Use HOT or Warm water so fat won't congeal.
  • For easy "meatloaf mixing", combine the ingredients with a potato masher.
  • Use a pastry blender to cut ground beef into small pieces after browning.
  • Poke an egg with a small sewing needle before hard-boiling, and the egg will peel with ease! And hold that needle in place with a magnet refrigerator clip.
  • To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before boiling!
  • Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based sauces. No more stains!
  • To start the flow of ketchup from a new bottle, insert a straw into the ketchup so air can get into the bottle.
  • If you spill coffee on your clothes, rinse it off with cold water, not hot. Hot water will let the stain set in.

Look what you can do with Alka-Seltzer!

  • Clean a toilet!  Drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous china.
  • Clean a vase!  To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets.
  • Polish jewelry!  Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes.
  • Clean a thermos bottle!  Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka-Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer, if necessary.)
  • Unclog a drain!  Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar.  Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water.

BOUNCE - Lots of Uses

  • Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.
  • Repels rodents - If you have your car, truck or motorcycle in storage and you're worried about rodent damage, place some Bounce dryer sheets on the engine compartment and on top of your tires - mice will stay away!
  • Eliminates static electricity from your television screen.  Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet or Bounce to keep dust from resetting.
  • It dissolves soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a used sheet of Bounce.
  • Freshens the air in you home, place a sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang one in the closet.
  • Prevents thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce to eliminate the static cling on the thread before sewing.
  • Eliminates the static cling from pantyhose. Rub a damp, used sheet of Bounce over the hose.
  • Prevents musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.
  • Freshens the air in your car. Place a sheet under the front seat.
  • Cleans baked-on food from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in the pan, fill with water, let sit over night, and sponge clean. The anti-static agents apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan while the fabric softening agents soften the baked-on food.
  • Eliminates odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.
  • Collects cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.
  • Eliminates static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent the dust from resettling.
  • Wipes up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.
  • Eliminates odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.
  • Deodorizes shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight so they'll smell great in the morning.

Tips & Tricks - Shoes & Tips for Odor Control

Tips for buying shoes:  Submitted by Cicec

  • Always shop at the end of the day, when your feet are largest.
  • Wear the same socks you'll wear when walking.
  • Put the shoes on and stand up.
  • Have someone else press their thumb down in front of your longest toe.  You should have a comfortable half inch of space beyond your longest toe.
  • You might try standing on a piece of cardboard and having someone trace your foot. Cut out that template and take it to the store with you. The cardboard should fit on the bottom sole of the shoe. If it sticks over the edges, you won't be treating your feet. You'll be having your feet treated!

Shoes - Odor Control

Are your shoes smelly? Here's a solution. Put some tea leaves into a pair of stockings & stuff each into a shoe. Leave for a day or two & the smell just vanishes!

~~~~~
Use of soap wrapper: Don't throw away the wrapper after removing a bar of soap. Place it inside your shoe cabinet or shoe box. It's a cheap way of filling the air with a nice smell.
Tips & Tricks for Microwaves
Dear Friends,
    I have been using microwaves since they first took over America, back in the mid 70's. The story below (fact or not) has happened to me on more than one occasion -- even when using supposed "microwave safe" dishes. Water and hot grease/oils are the worst. Read below .... pass along .... it will only take a minute.
Deb (MickiMeows)
Read the scientists explanation below its interesting.
Subject: boiling water
Microwaving Water to Heat it Up:
    I feel that the following is information that any one who uses a microwave oven to heat water should be made aware of.
    About five days ago, my 26 year old son decided to have a cup of instant coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before).
    I am not sure how long he set the timer for but he told me he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup he noted that the water was not boiling. Instantly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand but all the water had flew out onto his face due to the buildup of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face, which may leave scarring. He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye.
    While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc. It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.
    Please pass this information on to friends and family.
    Here is what our science teacher has to say on the matter: "Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new.
    What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form.  As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat that has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point. What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beverage spews when opened after having been shaken."
    Please pass this on to everyone you know, it could save a lot of pain and suffering.
Did You Know?
  • Microwave ovens cook with radio waves.  Microwaves are the shortest of radio waves.
  • Many people think that radiation leaks from microwaves.  Although some power leaks, it is so little that most scientists believe you do not need to worry.  You can take your microwave to a service shop to be checked with an FDA-certified meter or purchase an inexpensive home leakage tester.
  • The first microwave was designed for restaurant use and was called the Radarange.  The name came from an employee contest and was first demonstrated in 1947.  The first Radarange was large and cost more than $5,000.  Home countertop versions were introduced in 1967.
Thank you for this sink of dirty dishes; we have plenty of food to eat. Thank you for this pile of dirty, stinky laundry; we have plenty of nice clothes to wear.
And I would like to thank you, Lord, for those unmade beds; they were so warm and comfortable last night. I know that many have no bed. My thanks to you, Lord, for this bathroom, complete with all the splattered mirrors, soggy, grimy towels and dirty lavatory; they are so convenient. Thank you for this finger-smudged refrigerator that needs defrosting so badly; It has served us faithfully for many years. It is full of cold drinks and enough leftovers for two or three meals. Thank you, Lord, for this oven that absolutely must be cleaned today. It has baked so many things over the years. The whole family is grateful for that tall grass that needs mowing, the lawn that needs raking; we all enjoy the yard. Thank you, Lord, even for that slamming screen door. My kids are healthy and able to run and play. Lord, the presence of all these chores awaiting me says You have richly blessed my family. I shall do them cheerfully, and I shall do them gratefully.
