Did You
Know? Pasta Fun Facts
- "Pasta" is
Italian for "dough."
- It takes about a half a gallon of water to cook macaroni,
and about a gallon of water to clean the pot.
- The average person in
Italy eats more than 51 pounds of pasta every year.
The average person in
North America eats about 15-1/2 pounds of pasta per
year.
- Most pasta is made
using wheat products mixed with water. Other
types of pasta are made using ingredients such as
rice, barley, corn, and beans.
- Pasta is a good source of
carbohydrates. It also contains protein. Carbohydrates help fuel
your body by providing energy that is released slowly over time.
- Pasta comes in many different colors.
Most pasta is cream-colored, but some is made using spinach making it green,
red pasta that is made using tomato, gray pasta that is made using squid
ink, and some pasta is called "cellophane" because it becomes
transparent when cooked.
- Pasta comes in many different shapes and
sizes. Elaborate designs help hold sauces. Tube and
pillow-shaped pasta can be stuffed with different ingredients. Flat
pasta can be layered between ingredients.
- Approximately 2.75 million tons of pasta is
made in Italy each year.

Tips & Tricks for
Pasta & Sauces...
- Experiment now and then! Try a little nutmeg in your spaghetti sauce.
- Lasagna Tip!
It is not necessary to pre-cook the pasta before
baking lasagna. Add a few tablespoons of water around the edges if the
sauce is very thick, but be careful not to add too much water. Cover the
dish when baking. Test with a fork after normal cooking time to be sure
that the pasta is done. If not, cook a little longer, adding more water if
necessary. Try this technique a couple of times and you will get the hang
of it. You'd probably make lasagna more often since it's easier to work,
one step is eliminated, and your pasta will actually taste better this way!
- Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based
sauces. No more stains!
