Parker City is the smallest city in the U.S.A., but viewing the decorations for the Christmas season, it would rank among the communities with many more buildings, in the number and beauty of the efforts per household.
Perhaps one of the most interesting decorations is the work of Brian Slater, who has taken items
often found discarded along highways, in parks and other places where they create a nuisance.
Slater, who resides at 303 Euclid Avenue, on the Bluff, in Parker, has found a new use for pop cans. Those viewing his creations in front of his home, can see the large sleigh and a reindeer, pine trees and stars that he has designed using approximately 2,000 pop cans, and a few beer cans.
Quick to explain that the idea for the Christmas decorations is not his idea originally, he said that he saw a snowman and a small pine tree made from pop cans near Clintonville. Curious as to how they were made, he stopped and inquired. He doesn't recall the man's first name, but said his last name was Rumbaugh.
He adopted the idea, and last year had a snowman and pine tree in his yard. He
constructed it by lining the cans up in his basement, putting Liquid Nail on the cans, and pressing them together to form the figures.
This year, he expanded his creations by having a sleigh, reindeer, and trees, with a star suspended from a real tree. It required just over 600 cans for the sleigh and reindeer, and over four hundred for the tree and star.
Instead of placing electric lights on each of his creations, he uses floodlights to have the cans reflect the light. He has also placed a bicycle reflector on the deer's nose, to give it the Rudolph effect.
Pleased with his efforts, he is planning to add to the display next Christmas, and to have displays designed for other holidays also.
