MICRO BURST

A severe but short lived storm hit the Petroleum Valley shortly before 6:30 last evening, and which many residents called a tornado, but firemen believe it was a micro burst.
Trees crashed across Rt. 268 between Petrolia and Parker, with at least two homes damaged as trees fell on them. Lasting only seven to eight minutes, heavy rain fell intermittently for several hours, but rapid response by area fire companies had all roads cleared by 8 p.m.
Bruin and Petrolia fire companies had fire units on all area roads with power saws cutting the trees and removing them, working north from Petrolia, and Parker City crews worked south from Parker. Chicora was called for assistance, and as the units made progress, the Chicora crews stood by at the Karns City High School.
North Washington was called to clear trees from Daubenspeck
Road in Parker Township, as Bruin units worked removing trees from two trailer homes in Kelly Trailer Park, on the Bruin North Washington Road.
Barb McCollough, a member of the Bruin VFD said that telephone calls concerning downed trees kept them quite busy. Several firemen reporting for duty at both Petrolia and Bruin reported that they had to remove trees while in their personal vehicles while responding.
A Bruin native reported that a large trampoline was raised and dropped into her swimming pool, and an unconfirmed reports listed a tree dropped on two automobiles. No injuries were reported by any of the fire companies involved.
Petrolia's initial call was to the Centurian Restaurant in Petrolia, when the fire alarm was sounded. Only a short distance from the fire hall, firemen found an electrical wire at the rear of the building shorted.
Indspec Refinery, to the rear of the restaurant was without lights, but Witco Refinery, just behind the fire hall had all its light on.
While Bruin Fire Chief said at the Kelly site, that it had to be a tornado, with all the damage showing, Petrolia Fire Police Captain Eugene Blair said the action was more typical of a micro burst. In other area in the Petroleum Valley heavy rains fell at times, but experienced nothing like what hit from the Queenstown area to south east of Parker City. |
