Tips &
Tricks for Hunting...
When hunting, remember at sun
up hunt higher elevations and at sundown hunt the
lower
elevations. This is because the daytime air flow goes up, and the evening
airflow goes down and the airflow will carry your scent in that direction.

Ethical Hunter
The American
Indian was the original ethical hunter in Pennsylvania. Game was a total way of
life and he treasured it because his very existence depended on
it. His hunting skills brought not only food but skins for clothing, hides for
shelter, sinew for sewing, claws for decoration and a use for most of his
quarry. The Indian used the total animal but more than that, he took only what
he needed, took it only when he needed it, and recognized that his future
existence and that of his descendents depended on a continuing supply of
game. He had a reverence for animals and was a total ethical hunter, proud
of his skill but bound to use it only for a proper objective -- survival.

"Lyme Disease was named in 1977 when arthritis was observed in a cluster of children in and around Lyme, Connecticut.
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks.
Individuals who live or work in residential areas surrounded by tick-infested woods or overgrown brush are at risk of getting Lyme disease. Persons who work or play in their yard, participate in recreational activities away from home such as hiking, camping, fishing and hunting, or engage in outdoor occupations, such as landscaping, brush clearing, forestry, and wildlife and parks management in endemic areas may also be at risk of getting Lyme disease."
For more information about Lyme Disease, see the
Center For Disease Control Web site's section for Lyme Disease: www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/lyme

When you guys and gals are up in the big woods this year be careful
not to get lost; but if you do, here are some things to remember:
|
If you encounter a bear:
-
Stay calm
-
If you are close to the bear, back
away slowly while talking loudly to it.
-
If the bear is at a distance, give
the bear a wide berth. Do not approach it.
|
Things To Do If Lost
Be sure to always carry a survival kit. You just never
know when you might need it. (See our list of Items
to carry in a Survival Kit on our separate page for Hunting
Checklist & Survival Kit.)
- Find good water to drink or water that could be cleaned by use of
purifying tablets.
- Find or build a shelter.
- If you are able to start a fire, do so in a place it can be seen
. Do not let it go out!
- Keep your clothing dry. This will prevent hypothermia.
- If you are lost with a group, appoint one person as a leader and stay together. This
will help you to conserve energy and improve your chances for a fast rescue!
- Carry your compass and learn how to use it and you won't have to worry
about the previous 5 steps. (For instructions on how to use a compass,
click here.)
Happy Hunting!
~~~~~
How to use a compass:
To use a compass you must orient it first. To orient, you must first rotate the compass housing until the number of degrees
(the direction you want to travel) is lined up with the direction of travel
arrow. Hold the compass waist high and level. The direction of the travel
arrow should be straight ahead of you. Rotate your body until the red end of the
magnetic needle and the orienting arrow are aligned. You are now facing the
direction you wish to go. Sight an object directly in front of you. Forget about
the compass for a minute and walk to the object. Repeat the process till
you reach your destination.
