Butler County, PA
Predominate Fish in Streams & Lakes

  • Trout: Bear Creek, Buffalo Creek, Little Buffalo Creek, Little Connoquenessing Creek, McMurray's Run, Silver Creek, Slippery Rock Creek, Thorn Creek

  • Bass and Pike: Connoquenessing Creek, Glade Run Lake, Lake Arthur, Slippery Rock Creek, Wolf Creek

  • Muskie and Panfish: Connoquenessing Creek, Glade Run Lake, Lake Arthur

  • Walleye: Glade Run Lake, Lake Arthur

Lake Arthur
One source reported that some of the year's best action occurs during the month of November, and that it's the shore anglers who are the ones cashing in.  Last  week a 27-inch walleye was caught there were reports of others being hooked in the 2-foot range.  Other fine catches have been of jumbo-sized perch.  The walleye and the perch are some of the best table fare of the fish caught at Lake Arthur.

Allegheny River
The walleye and sauger fishing goes well.  Reports from the Tarentum section of the river have revealed catches of sauger up to 18 inches, and walleyes have topped of at about 20 inches.  The bass fishing has slowed up quite a bit  but most anglers are now fishing for saugers and walleyes anyhow.  The best walleye action is taking place below the dams. also try the mouths of feeder streams coming into the river.

Buffalo Creek
This stream flows east from Butler County into Armstrong County.  The 3-1/2 miles of water in the special regulations area is the best trout water on the stream.  It's well stocked, and worthy of a Fall fishing trip.

Fishing Humor, Jokes & Cartoons

A guy decided to go ice fishing one winter's day. As he started drilling his hole a voice from above said "There are no fish under the ice!" Three times he started to drill and three times he heard the same words. Finally he looked toward the sky and asked "Is that you Lord?"
"No, stupid" came the reply, "I'm the hockey rink announcer

A guy rings his boss.
I can't come to work today.
The boss asks why?
The Guy says it's my eyes.
What's wrong with your eyes the boss asks?
I just can't see myself coming to work,
so I'm going fishing instead.

What's the difference between a hunter and a fisherman?
A hunter lies in wait. A fisherman waits and lies.

A Little Bit of Humor...
Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they lit a fire in the craft it sank...proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too.

A hunter was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful Princess, I will stay with you for one week."
The hunter took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a Princess, I'll stay with you and do anything you want."
Again the hunter took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally the frog asked, "What is it? I've told you I'm a beautiful Princess, that I'll stay with you for a week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"
The hunter said, "Look, I'm a avid hunter and when I'm not hunting, I'm fishing, so I don't have time for girlfriends, but a talking frog is really cool!"

Doreen's husband Matt died suddenly one day. Doreen was taking care of the funeral arrangements with the undertaker when she was asked how she wanted Matt's obituary to read.
Doreen asked the undertaker, "How much does an obituary cost?"
The undertaker replied, "One dollar per word."
Doreen then said, "I want the obituary to read - MATT IS DEAD."
The undertaker was an old fishing buddy of Matt's and he was a little disturbed by such a curt obituary, so he offered, "I'll make you a special deal since I knew Matt so well. I'll pay for half of the obituary out of my own pocket."
Doreen's face lit up and she replied, "Great. I want it to read - MATT IS DEAD, BOAT FOR SALE."

how can fish be considered "brain food?"

You might be a fisherman if...

  • You have a power worm dangling from your rear view mirror because you think it makes a good air freshener.
  • Your wedding party had to tie tin cans to the back of your bass boat.
  • You call your boat "sweetheart" and your wife "skeeter".
  • Your local tackle shop has your credit card number on file.
  • You keep a flippin stick by your favorite chair to change the TV channels with.
  • You name your black lab "Mercury" and your cat "Evinrude".
  • Bass Pro Shop has a private line just for you.
  • You have your name painted on a parking space at the launch ramp.
  • You have a photo of your 10 lb. bass on your desk at work instead of your family.
  • You consider viennies and crackers a complete meal.
  • You think MEGABYTES means a great day fishing.
  • You send your kid off to the first day of school with his shoes tied in a palomar knot.
  • You think there are four seasons--Pre-spawn, Spawn, Post Spawn and Hunting.
  • Your $30,000 bass boat's trailer needs new tires so you just "borrow" the ones off your house.
  • You trade your wife's van for a smaller vehicle so your bass boat will fit in the garage.
  • Your kids know it's Saturday---Because the boats gone,

Why do Bass often strike a lure right after being released and not remember it? Because a Bass has two memory centers one for each eye. Say the first time he hit your lure he sees it with his right eye and if he hits it again right away, more than likely he saw it with the left eye.

Fishing Poems

The Fishermen
Written by Mildred Lenhart
From "A Potpourri Of All Things"
By Mildred R. Lenhart ©2000

Dad took the kids 'a fishin'
To teach them all about
Being still and baiting hooks;
And catching rainbow trout.

The lines are cast, and so they wait.
The fish pass up poor papa's bait.
The kids get silly - pokin' fun.
Does Dad get a nibble?  No, not one.

With their fish held high, and a grin on each face,
That even a sunburn couldn't erase,
They greeting Mom with wild, happy shouts;
Today they taught Daddy how to catch trout.

Fishing Tips & Tricks

  • Release undersized trout as soon as possible.  Fish that have been handled roughly or are played- in too long seldom survive the ordeal.

  • When you release a completely exhausted fish, hold it upright in the water long enough to let it regain it's strength. Otherwise it might not survive being in the heavy current.

  • To make sure you can always find a swivel when you need one, string a dozen or so on a large safety pin and fasten the pin to the underside of your shirt-pocket flap.

  • When gathering night crawlers after dark, use a flashlight with red cellophane over the lens. A white light may scare them back into their holes.

  • If a night crawler refuses to be pulled from its burrow, continue to exert steady pressure. The worm will soon tire and slide out.

  • Just after heavy rains, crawlers often cover sidewalks and roads. But, picking up a slippery night crawler can be frustrating and time consuming. Instead, try using a spatula.

  • Try "scouring" your night crawlers several days before a fishing trip. Place them in a container filled with sphagnum moss until the worms rid themselves of the dirt in their bodies. This makes the worms more attractive to fish.

  • When you are ice-fishing and you want to keep your minnows from freezing, put them in a wide-mouthed insulated picnic jug.  The wide mouth permits you to use a net to remove the minnows.

  • Bass love to lie in the shade. When you cast to a rock or stump, aim your first cast for the shaded side. If a bass is at home, that's probably where you'll find him.

  • To check monofilament line and leaders for fraying, pull them through a handful of cotton. Fibers from the cotton will catch in any abrasion and will be easily visible. If you find these telltale signs of wear, it is best to replace the line. Or you could lose that trophy fish.
