Passing motorists and area residents have viewed the
Veteran's Memorial on Main Street, in Chicora, watching as a group of Boy Scouts, and a couple of interested adults beautify the plot honoring veterans that originated during WW II.
When Chris Serafine sought a project for his Eagle Scout Court of Honor, he decided that with so many young men, and women, in the service of their country now, work at the Memorial would be of value to them also.
A member of Troop 217, Serafine enlisted the help of his fellow scouts, his father, Dave Serafine, a committee chairman of the Scouts, and Ron Huff, Moose Lodge Charter Representative, and the work was started.
With the costly work, additional financial help was needed. A group of the Scouts visited Chicora Borough Council, and were given support for the project. The borough is bearing the costs incurred in the placing of large stones to replace the
wall that was deteriorating, and to extend it across the front of the plot also.
Drains were place at the rear of the stone and gravel placed over the drains, to prevent the ground from washing away. Flower beds at the front, next to the sidewalks had landscape ties placed around them, and benches are being placed at the Memorial to seat elderly veterans and those unable to stand during the Memorial Day services, and for others opposite the veterans.
The flowers being planted were donated by Virginia Bergbigler, United Block donated the rebars, and Serafine donated work with his heavy
equipment and hauling of the stone. The stone memorial was also cleaned and Steve Miller, who painted sign at the top of the monument, is being asked to give it a fresh coat of paint.
The finished project will be a pleasant addition to the Memorial Day Services, following the parade on May 31.
