Very little is known about the history of St. John the Evangelist Catholic
Church at Coylesville, in Clearfield Township, just off Rt. 422, between
Worthington and Butler, prior to the 1840's when four acres of land was donated for
the construction of the church.
The land was donated by four German families after considerable debate was held on establishment of a church. The site was acceptable to the majority of
the families involved and Father Larkin, of Freeport presided at the laying of
the cornerstone on August 14, 1853.
The cornerstone laying is now considered the birth date of the church, and
the Sesqui-Centennial Celebration was held recently of 150 years of worship.
The members of the church had met in private homes prior to that date, with
Father Cody, of Sugarcreek, and Father Larkin, of Freeport, providing the
leadership.
Horse drawn sleds, wagons, buckboards and carts were used for hauling
bricks kilned on surrounding farms, and timber hand hewed from the surrounding
forests, the 85 foot long by 45 foot wide church, seating 450 persons, was
finished by the end of the following summer. Since electricity was not yet
available, the parishioners hung their lanterns along the side walls to provide
illumination.
In 1856, several Irish families donated an additional 26 acres making a
total of 30 acres on which additional buildings were erected. In 1856 a rectory
and a building used as a school, under the direction of Father Christy, was
added. The rectory destroyed by fire in 1944, and the present rectory was
constructed. The school building still stands and is used as the church hall.
Father Christy served during the Civil War after being commissioned as a
Chaplain for the 78th Pennsylvania Regiment. He became known as the Fighting
Chaplain of the Army of the Cumberland for his fearless care of the sick and
wounded on the battlefields.
In 1877 the 158 foot tower and cross was added at a cost of $4,000, and in
1896, under the direction of Father Shanahan, the high pitched roof was added
over the old low gabled covering, completing the church as it appears today.
Bishop Donald W. Wuerl was the Mass Celebrant, assisting the administrator,
Fr. Louis F. Pascazi, and guest priests in the Mass of Celebration. Lou
Bauldoff, a parishioner who chaired the celebration, and Jen Montgomery, shared the
Lector duties. Don Rasley was the organist and Rita Ryan, was the choir director.
Regular Mass is held Saturday evening at 5 p.m., Sunday mornings at 8 a.m.
and 10 a.m., and weekdays at 9 a.m. |

Three friars were behind on
their belfry payments, so they opened a small florist shop to raise funds.
Since everyone liked to buy flowers
from the men of God, the rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair.

He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and
begged the friars to close down, but they would not. He asked his mother to go and ask the
friars to get out of the business. They would not.
So, the rival florist hired Hugh McTaggart, the roughest
and most vicious thug in town to persuade them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and
