History
- Brookville PA Area & Jefferson County |
In 1796 Joseph and Andrew Barnett and Samuel
Scott started the first settlement in the Port Barnett area one mile east of
downtown Brookville. Moses Knapp was the first settler in the area.
He built a grist mill and a log house. In 1830 the town was designated the
county seat.
Because of the location of Brookville, along the
Susquehanna and Waterford Turnpikes, the town grew. By 1822 there were 40
dwellings, a courthouse, four stores, and four taverns.
Today Brookville is a community of more than
4,200.
