Flood Tips
Article by Leroy Andre - 7/30/03
With a number of floods hitting the area, and warnings of future flooding
due to the heavy rains that have plagued most of the nation, the Pennsylvania
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), has issued tips designed to
protect the health and safety of residents.
Kelly Burch, Northwest Regional Director for DEP, has advised residents
whose homes have been affected by recent flooding, or are in flood prone areas,
precautions to take to ensure safe cleanups.
"Heavy storms and flooding presents many potential dangers for injury and
disease, and it is important that people working on homes after flooding use
caution when working in the flooded areas," Burch warned. Recommended
actions include:
- Use care when entering a flood damaged
building
- Knock down loose, wet ceiling plaster before moving through or working in a
house
- Watch for holes in the floor, loose board and board with nails sticking
up
- Wear rubber soled shoes or boot and rubber gloves and turn off the main
switch, using a piece of rubber, plastic or dry wood, while standing on a dry
board to prevent electrocution
- Do not pump water from the basement until the water has receded, pumping a
water-filled basement could result in the walls collapsing.
- Never use a gas powered pump or generator in an enclosed area, to prevent
being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes
- Protect scratches or
wounds from being contacted by contaminated water. Wounds should be cleaned immediately with soap and water and a tetanus shot may be
needed, since raw sewage and other bacteria in flood waters can cause
infections
- Disinfect everything
that the flood water has touched with a two percent chlorine bleach solution, Two or three capfuls of
chlorine bleach to a bucket of water is recommended, and gloves and boots should be worn during the
disinfecting process
- Discard food that comes in contact with flood water, check refrigerated or
frozen foods carefully if power outages occurs. Any frozen food that has
partially or completely defrosted should be use immediately or discarded. Perishable
foods kept in a refrigerator that has been off more than four hours or that
has warmed to more than 45 degrees should be discarded.
- Drinking water that you suspect of being contaminated, should be brought to a
rolling boil for at least a minute, and water that is cloudy or has an unusual
odor, should be boiled.
- Keep all the cleaning and disinfecting materials out of the reach of
children.
- Air dry family treasures, such as books, photographs or paintings within 48
hours, if you can't air dry them immediately, freeze them if possible, and if
not keep them as cool as possible.
- Test plumbing and basement drains by pouring a bucket of water down them.
If the water does not run out, remove the clean-out plug from the trap and
remove the mud with a wire.
- Don't rush to move in, the house must be thoroughly dried
and throughly cleaned.
- Open doors and windows to ventilate and dry inside, and wait until all
floors, ceilings, walls and furnishings are dry and free of mold and mildew
before trying to repair or salvage.
- Floors should not be repaired until fully dry. To prevent shrinkage and
deformation, windows and doors should be opened, and buckled floors can be drawn
back into place with nails, humps can be removed by planing and sanding.
- Drawers should be removed and all mud and dirt cleaned from wooden
furniture.
- Furniture should be dried slowly indoors so as to prevent warping from the
sun.
- Washers, dryers and furnaces can usually be cleaned and tested by
qualified electricians and replacing expensive appliances should not be necessary.
- Mattresses, carpets and rugs should be
discarded, since in most cases, they become so saturated with
contaminated materials that cleaning attempts are futile.

The Poetry of Charles L. Cingolani
Born in Butler, PA
|
|
Hello Butler!
I just wanted to tell you that for the Butler Bicentennial, and especially for
Butlerites, I have written a series of poems dedicated to our hometown. My
name is Charles Cingolani of the BHS Class of 1950. I would like to invite you
to have a look at the 13 poems about Butler. Click in when you get a chance.
|
|
It was at Jefferson
and Main, the heart of town,
but offset,
as if to remind the Bank
of something,
that our clock stood proud
and solid, on cast iron...
